9 things to do in Agadir

Agadir is a big town on Morocco’s southern coast. It is a very special city where you can not see where the ocean ends and the sky begins. In Agadir it is usually very foggy and cloudy in the morning. But don’t be afraid the sun will always come out around 11 o’ clock. The mornings and the evenings can be very cold, but is getting even hotter during the day.
Agadir offers many small and nice restaurants and for those who like to go out in the night – Agadir has many shisha bars and night clubs as well.
Next to the beautiful sandy beach the new port is located. It is a great place for a walk or taking pictures.
But as everywhere in Morocco you can see a lot of poverty in Agadir. Both young and old people are asking you for money. You can not be sure if it is real poorness or if it is just a trick to earn money. One Advice: Do not take things for granted. If anyone wants to help you or show you the way to the place where you want to go – it definitely not for free. Me and my friend made this mistake on our first evening where we just wanted to find the tourist office to get a map from the town. Our “tour guide” led us into a part of the city where you better do not deny to give some money. This taught us a lesson we will not forget.
But let us take a look at the things you can do in Agadir:

Quad riding in Agadir

1. Quad riding

One thing you can do in Agadir is quad riding. If you book a tour the organizer takes you to a small desert where you can experience to ride a quad. I have to admit that in the first 10 minutes on the quad I thought I would not be able to ride it. For someone who has never driven a motorcycle yet it is a completely new experience. I died thousands inner deaths before I finally had fun. But after a while i finally found a way to operate it and it got easier for me. Usually you have a leader who is driving in front of you. But he doesn’t go too fast so it should be easy for you to keep up.
I would advice you to wear clothes which are comfortable and can get dirty. When you finished the quad riding they will try to clean your clothes with something similar to a leaf blower. With my luck, the man held it directly in my face (so better cover it with your hands).

Camel ride

2. Camel riding

Isn’t camel riding one thing which everyone has on its bucket list? In Morocco many people offer you to ride a camel or to take a picture with one. I would recommend to book a tour from your hotel so that you can really have a long ride on a camel. I did this together with my friend as well. We were around 1 1/2 hours on the back of the camel and it was a really funny experience. A camel walks irregular and impulsive. It has a kinda odd way of walking which you can not compare to sitting on a horse. The best thing you can do is to let your body swing back and forth and hold onto the saddle post for some support. If you are not very athletic it may be possible to get sore muscles.

Souk in Agadir

3. Shopping in the Souk El Had

Souks are a big part in the Moroccan culture. The Souk of Agadir El Had is where many people go for their shopping. People sell tons of fruit, vegetables, herbs, souvenirs, teapots and spices. The souk is very big and you can spend half a day by wandering through the aisles. If you take a taxi to the souk you can expect a price around 20 Dirham.

4. Paradise Valley

Paradise Valley

Paradise Valley is close to the city Agadir. We booked a half day tour and as usual for tours like these our guide made a stop at a botanical garden/shop. We were shown how argan seeds are harvested and shelled and toured the garden. After that our journey to Paradise Valley continued. When we arrived at the first pool our guide asked us if we want to go further and we spent an hour climbing rooks until we finally stopped at a beautiful lake. Crystal clear and cool water was surrounded by rocks. We jumped into the water and enjoyed the view for a moment before we had to return.
Paradise Valley can be very beautiful but I would advice you to make a trip on your own and not with an agency. The Valley is not far away and you can enjoy it better if you are not on an organized tour and can discover the nature on your own.

5. Kasbah of Agadir

5. Kasbah of Agadir
On the top of the hill in the city you can find the Kasbah of Agadir. It was built in 1541. The colossal walls of the Kasbah are Agadir’s only proper historic attraction which remained after the big earthquake in 1960 . If you want you can walk up along the hiking path. For those who maybe want a bit more relaxing holidays it is possible to drive to the Kasbah. The taxi ride costs 100 Dirham for both ways – up and down. But the Kashbah is definitely worth it. The view over the rest of the city is awesome.

Crocodile Park in Agadir

6. Crocopark

The Crocopark is home for plenty “Nile Crocodiles”. The park is very beautiful and you are able to observe the crocodiles in their daily life from several view points. As a visitor you are greeted at the entrance by a huge crocodile mouth in which you must enter to access the reception area. The circuit is marked by informational signs to learn more about crocodiles and also about the different plants which inhabit the small gardens. The park is definitely worth a visit.

Fisher village in Souss Massa

7. Tour to the Souss Massa National Parc and Tiznit

The National Parc Souss Massa lies in the south of Agadir. It’s main spot is the Oued Massa river, where numerous exotic birds come to breed. If you are lucky you maybe see a flamingo.
In the parc you can find as well some small villages. Tifnit is one of the small fishing village of Souss Massa National Parc. It has a breathtaking beach surrounded of high dunes and the dry countryside of Morocco. This was such a unique place. I loved it. I could have spent days there just standing at the beach and watching the waves of the deep blue sea.
Close to the parc the city Tiznit can be discovered. Tiznit is a town in the south of the region of Souss Massa. The town is well known for its silver jewelry and handicraft.
When we arrived in Tiznit we had the luck that a market took place in the middle of the town. It was a big fruit and vegetable market where you could feel the moroccan flair. Many people were walking around, carrying baskets over their shoulders or on their heads or were trading with their goods. It is not unusual to see women wearing burkas and covering their faces. I really liked this trip because it gave us an unforgettable impression of moroccans culture.

8. The Beach

Agadir is known for its beautiful long sandy beach. The golden sand feels really soft and there is always a small breeze from the Atlantic Ocean. When you are laying at the beach there are great views to admire, for example the nearby hill with the Arabic inscriptions. So just enjoy your time at Agadir’s Beach!

La Vallée des Oiseaux

9. The Vallée des Oiseaux

The Vallée des Oiseaux is a little park right in the center of Agadir. It is free to enter and a nice place for a short walk. You can see parrots, flamingos, llamas, peacocks and other animals.
